A traditional video slot shows symbols on vertical reels. A payline pays when specified symbols land in a required pattern, usually starting from the left. Ways-to-win games count matching symbols on adjacent reels without using fixed line paths. Cluster games reward groups of matching symbols under their own rules.
RTP and the house edge
Return to player, or RTP, is a theoretical proportion returned as prizes over a very large number of plays under stated conditions. If a game lists 96% RTP, that does not mean a £1 spin returns 96p or that £100 of play will return £96. Short sessions can vary sharply from the long-run model.
The difference between 100% and the theoretical RTP is commonly described as the house edge. Feature choices or stake configurations can sometimes have different RTP values, so the in-game information screen matters.
Volatility
Volatility describes how prize frequency and size tend to be distributed. Lower-volatility games generally produce smaller awards more often; higher-volatility games generally concentrate more of the theoretical return in less frequent, larger outcomes. It is not a measure of quality and does not remove randomness.
Wild
A symbol that substitutes for specified regular symbols according to the game rules. It may not substitute for every special symbol.
Scatter
A symbol that can trigger a prize or feature without following an ordinary payline, depending on the paytable.
Free spins
A feature that awards a set of game rounds under defined rules. It is still part of the slot’s mathematical model.
Multiplier
A rule that increases a calculated prize by a stated factor. Conditions determine when and where it applies.
Random does not mean due
Independent outcomes do not compensate for a previous run. A sequence of losses does not make the next spin more likely to win, and stopping a reel animation does not usually change an outcome already selected by the game system. Treat every stake as an entertainment cost, not progress toward a future return.
